Reading Rainbow

I've become obsessed with three books at the same time.  On Kindle, you can get free samples of books.  They are pretty good size samples, enough to get you hooked.  But they don't last forever so you have to read them before they delete them.  At this moment, I am reading The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and Nefertiti: A Novel.  They are all fantastic.  And I have two more samples waiting in line...

30 Realizations

This is going to be an ongoing segment on the blog.  I have slowly realized that the way I look at things these days is drastically different than how I used to look at them a few years ago.  Basically, my 30 year old brain sees the world a little differently than my 20 year old brain, which is to be expected.  Some of the things I realize surprise me, some scare me and others just make me laugh.

So, the title of this segment, "30 Realizations", isn't going to be thirty things I have learned.  They will be things I have discovered while in my thirties.  I hope that all you thirty-somethings out there enjoy it.  Maybe you've already moved pass me on some of them, or maybe these will be warnings.  Either way, it should be a fun ride...

Pride of Dixie

This is a little late, but the Pride of Dixie antique show was the last antiques show of the month (we went to a show every weekend in August).  When we got there, I was surprised to find out that I had been to this show with Mama Crab way back when I used to live here the first time.  She did pretty good that day so I had high hopes.  There was also a gun show going on (with a name like PoD, is anyone surprised?) but we just bought tickets to the antiques show.  Gun shopping is not how I like to spend my summer Saturdays...

When we walked in, a really nice beer stein caught Husband's eye, but with a price tag of $65, he kept going.  We found a lot of cool things, but we just weren't ready to spend the kind of money that it requires to go antique shopping yet.  And we don't have a permanent location so these things will come later.

I did manage to find a cool, mini pocket watch that I'm going to turn into a necklace.  Husband talked the lady down from $10 to $8.  Take a look!

The Internets wouldn't let me put it up the right way, but you get the idea...

After we walked through the whole show, we went back to a lady that was selling a ton of sparkly brooches.  One of my ambitions for when I am an eccentric old lady is to wear lots of brooches.  I figure the sooner I start collecting the better!  :-)  Well, the brooch lady was right across from the guy with the beer stein, and he remembered Husband.  He told Husband to make an offer and after some discussion, Husband walked away with his new German beer stein for $45.  Oh, and did i mention it was a limited edition, numbered design from Germany?  I think we did pretty well for our last antiques show for a while.

Zeminole's Baby Shower

Zeminole, my BFF, (I've known her since high school) is having a baby girl this November.  I am SO EXCITED!!!  We had her baby shower a couple weeks ago and I think it turned out really well.  Mama Zeminole and Mama Crab worked really hard on decorations.  Both ladies are very creative and came up with some stuff I just had to share.  I did a few things too for the shower.  I'm particularly proud of how the banner came out (thanks for the inspiration, Q!).  Take a look...

Chandelier made from a wedding cake form and baby toys by Mama Zeminole

Better shot of my banner (it says "Coming Soon")

One of the many center pieces (the nursery has an owl theme)

Baby's Breath at the baby shower!  So clever!  And baby themed vases at all the tables!

Mama Crab was very proud of the bassinet she made to hold cards.

This was my present.  I was really happy with how the wrapping went. (The red thing is a little stuffed crab!)

I think that Zeminole had a really good time at her shower.  We worked really hard to give her something special.  And Baby Z got a ton of stuff!  She's going to be one stylin' baby with a sweet room!  Mama Crab, Aunt Crab and me went in together and got her a crib.  And Mama Zeminole is making her an owl quilt, curtains and bedding to finish off the room!  I can't wait to meet her!

Missed the Target

Remember how excited I was about the Missoni collection for Target?  Well, now I hate Target.  The one piece that I was craving sold out online and in stores by noon.  I left work on my break to go to Target and they had nothing left.  I had to hurry and order a bunch of stuff online so I could get some pieces.  But most of the pieces I wanted were sold out.  I raced to a Target after work and the store was picked clean.  There were just empty shelves.  I'm convinced that one of two things happened.

1.  Target employees took stuff home last night to sell on Ebay.  (There was a bunch of stuff from the collection listed on Ebay by noon and for triple the price)

2.  Target deliberately kept their stock low to force a frenzy.

Either way, I'm really disappointed with them.  These capsule collections are supposed to be a way for everyone to enjoy labels that they normally wouldn't be able to get.  What's the point if they only have 5 or 6 things in a store?  I just hope that my shipment comes in next week and that I got all the right sizes, cuz Lord knows I won't be able to exchange them.  And I guess I'm just going to have to decide if I want to spend $150 on a piece that regularly cost $40.

I repeat, I hate Target.

Holla, if you hate Target.

(Labor Day) Weekend Update

Husband is a very lucky man.  Not only is he married to me ( :-P ), but he also gets a four day weekend for his birthday every year because its September 3rd.  (My friend Patty also gets a long weekend, her b-day is Sept. 2nd).  These lucky people get to really party since they have Monday to sleep it off.

This year, since Husband did such a fabulous job with my 30th, I wanted to do something special for him.  We decided to head to Universal Studios in Orlando to see Harry Potter World, since we are both huge fans.  Our vacation club got us a condo in Kissimmee so we were off!  The plan was to head out on Friday, do Harry Potter World Saturday for Husband's birthday, then spend Sunday at the beach and head back on Monday.

One of the birthday gifts I had planned was to get Husband a beach cruiser (I got one for my b-day and I wanted us to ride together).  I thought I had blown it when Walmart didn't have any in the 3 stores that are near me, which meant I had to order it.  I thought I got lucky when they said that it was in on Thursday.  Yay!  I could give it to Husband before we left and we could take our bikes with us to the beach!  I skipped my yoga class to go get it.  I wait forever in the customer service line only to find out that I need to go to the "shrub area" to pick up the bike.  I go there only to find out that I need to go to the "ship to store" counter located between electronics and shoes.  By this time, my excitement has been replaced by irritation.  They bring out the bike (after I ring the bell 3 times) and I ask if they can put it together for me.  They say no.  Of course.  At this point I'm not to thrilled anymore to be in Walmart so I leave with my bike, in a giant cardboard box.  No one helps me to my car, or stops me for that matter as I walk out with it, or helps me get the thing into the trunk.  At this point, I'm pretty upset.  I was hoping to set the bike in the driveway, put a bow on it and call Husband out.  Instead, I tell him (through tears) that the large box in the trunk is his birthday bike and he has to put it together.  So that's how we spend Thursday evening.  That and packing.

Friday went smoothly.  Didn't get on the road until noon but made it to the condo.  We check everything out and like what we see.  We're hungry so we head out to the main road to get some dinner.  Chili's was packed so after we decide not to eat there, we get into the car to find a different place.  We get out of the parking spot and the car dies right in front of the restaurant.  Husband asks some random to help push and we get it back into the spot.  Call AAA and proceed to wait for a tow truck.  In the mean time, I pop the hood to see if I can figure out the problem (with Daddy on the phone of course).  I check the fluids, fine.  After a lengthy search for the battery, its fine.  Next, the air filter.  That turned out to be impossible to find without a flashlight and toolbox.  Checked the oil, fine.  So, fluids good, getting power, its either the fuel is interrupted or the air is.  By this time, the tow tuck is here.  He opens the gas cap, tells Husband to start the car and listens.  After 5 minutes, he says "your fuel pump is dead".  Well, now I know how to check that.  He tows the car to the condo and gives us the name of the closest, most reliable mechanic.  At this point, it looks like we aren't getting to HP on Husband's birthday.  And we have no food or water.

Saturday morning, Husband's birthday, starts with another tow.  We get to Pep Boys and they start to find the problem.  The guy that the previous tow truck guy recommended is really nice.  In about an hour (we go and have Chick-fil-a breakfast) we find out that the fuel pump and filter need to be replaced and the fuel lines need a very good cleaning.  Grand total: $629.  Happy Birthday!!!!

Its going to take until 4pm to fix so we try to figure out how to salvage the rest of Husband's day.  We get a rental car number from the nice mechanic and I look for a bus route.  No rental cars and good luck trying to figure out the LYNX bus routes.  It seems like we'll be spending a fortune on cabs until the nice mechanic, who is also the mechanic for Hertz, says "let me make a call".  He gets us a car for $25.  And they will even come and get us.  It looks like we will make it to HP after all!  So, at around 12:15, after waiting in a long line to buy tickets, getting fingerprinted and fighting off strollers and stupid people, we are standing in front of Hogwarts.  And it is amazing.  We go through the castle, get Butterbeer from The Hogs Head, check out the candy at Honeydukes, meet the conductor of the Hogwarts Express, look at the toys in Zonkos and try to pick out a wand at Olivanders.  It was all so cool.  After Universal Studios, we headed to Publix so I could make a birthday dinner and get a birthday cake.  Got a great cookies n' cream ice cream and marble cake birthday cake.  It was so good.  After dinner, Husband got his other present, a leather bound, signed, first edition copy of his favorite book by his favorite author.  At least this present went the way it was supposed to.  And Husband really liked it.

The next day we head to Daytona Beach for some sun and ocean.  We end up chilling at the condo that night and watching TV.  I think, despite, everything that happened, Husband had a good birthday.  I tried really hard to make it special for him.  I hope next year, my ideas go a little more smoothly.  :)

Oh, and we saw the world's largest orange.
